Apr. 21—GROTON — A massive fire following a tractor-trailer crash on the Gold Star Bridge has shut down Interstate 95 in both directions, officials said.
State Department of Transportation cameras on the bridge show smoke billowing from the southbound crash site around exit 86 in Groton.
State police are trying to confirm details and if there are any injuries, Sgt. Christine Jeltema said.
Motorist Chris Stevens of East Lyme shot dramatic video of the blaze while driving over the bridge at 11:20 a.m., according to his Twitter account. Three-foot high flames and reams of black smoke can be seen lapping at the pavement for a long stretch in the video.
New London police said motorists should expect prolonged delays.
Police have not provided any details. Sources are saying authorities are concerned the bridge may collapse and that firefighters are being moved off the structure. Firefighters are also saying that building under the bridge are on fire as well.
There is no word on the driver of the tractor trailer or the tanker that crashed.
